Homeopathic Treatment of Hemophilia A in a Kitten, by Siri Dayton, DVM

Briar kittenBriar is a male Domestic Short Hair who was found as a stray at 4 weeks of age. He was raised on a raw diet and received no vaccinations. He was a feisty kitten, played wildly, flying through the house. He was socially engaged and affectionate, but was easily provoked to violence. The only remarkable past medical history was that he bled more than expected from a phlebotomy site when FeLV/FIV testing was done at 7 weeks of age.

When Briar was 6 months old, he was taken to his local veterinarian to be neutered. Pre-surgical lab work was drawn the morning of the surgery. Again, more than typical bleeding occurred at the phlebotomy site. The veterinarian was concerned enough that he submitted a clotting profile, but proceeded to castrate Briar that morning before the test results were received.

Post-operatively, Briar was extremely fractious and bled excessively from the castration site. He was re-anesthetized and scrotal sutures were placed in an attempt to stop the bleeding. When this proved unsuccessful, he was given Vitamin K1 but hemorrhaging continued. The veterinarian finally telephoned the owner to say that Briar had been bleeding for several hours and he was worried the kitten would not survive. He asked permission to give the cat a transfusion of fresh frozen plasma.

Before authorizing a transfusion, the owner contacted me as her regular homeopathic veterinarian was unavailable. In the acute situation, there was no way of knowing whether this was an acute case of rodenticide poisoning or a case of deeper chronic disease with an underlying inherited clotting abnormality. However, the early history of excessive bleeding after FeLV/FIV testing gave more weight to the presence of a pre-existing chronic disease. Based on the history above, two very characteristic symptoms were immediately evident: the severe hemorrhaging and his violent state as he recovered from anesthesia. A quick analysis was done as follows:

Phosphorus is effective for the acute treatment of unrelenting hemorrhage of bright red blood from wounds, and it is a prominent remedy to counteract ill effects of anesthesia. It can also act more deeply in a case such as Briar’s where there is suspicion of an underlying clotting disorder; it has an affinity for blood disorders and patients who have a temperament with a tendency to quick violence. The analysis confirmed that Phosphorus was a good choice of remedy based on these simple characteristic symptoms. I prescribed one dose of Phosphorus 30C.

The owner took the remedy to the clinic where she was ushered into the ward. She found her kitten in a blood-splattered cage, disoriented, and displaying extremely aggressive behavior (deemed untouchable by the technician). Extensive bruising was evident around the scrotal sacs that extended bilaterally down his medial thighs to his stifles. Briar’s demeanor softened immediately when he recognized his owner so she was able to administer the remedy easily.

After dosing him, the owner covered the cage to allow him to rest. Fifteen minutes later, all hemorrhaging had ceased and his emotional state was milder. She took him home right away against the operating veterinarian’s recommendations. By the following morning, he appeared completely normal, with good energy and attitude. All evidence of bruising had resolved. His response to a single dose of Phosphorus corrected the hemorrhage and the mental derangement completely and quickly, so no further remedies were prescribed.

The veterinarian confirmed a diagnosis of Hemophilia A based on the clotting profile results that were received the following day.

Briar cat 2Briar is now 8 years old and enjoys excellent health. While he has had no further trauma to test his clotting abilities, he regularly eats raw meaty bones and has had no bleeding from his mouth or gums. He received one dose of Phosphorus 200C in October 2010 for decreased appetite and emotional distress after a Great Dane with whom he was closely bonded died. With the knowledge of his beautiful response to Phosphorus years earlier, and his excellent overall health since, it was clear that the initial dose of Phosphorus he had received after his surgery had acted at a deep level. As it is also a prominent remedy for symptoms of grief, Phosphorus was again selected for Briar and his symptoms resolved rapidly and completely.

Other than these 2 doses of Phosphorus, Briar has needed no further health interventions of any kind.
